New to Caregiving? Start Here
Most people become caregivers overnight. One phone call, and you are suddenly managing appointments, medications, and paperwork for someone you love. You do not have to figure it all out today. Start with these three steps.
GET PERMISSION TO BE IN THE LOOP: Doctors' offices cannot share information with you unless the patient says they can. Ask each office for its release form and have your loved one sign it.
MAKE ONE LIST OF THE BASICS: Write down every medication and dose, every doctor with a phone number, the insurance details, and two emergency contacts. Keep it in one note on your phone so it is with you at every appointment.
SET UP MEDICAL ID ON THEIR IPHONE: Open the Health app on their iPhone, tap their picture, and choose Medical ID. Add conditions, medications, allergies, and emergency contacts. Turn on Show When Locked so first responders can see it without a passcode.
That is enough for week one. Your future self will thank you!
