Take Care of the Caregiver: Small Habits That Keep You Going

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Caregivers are often the last people to look after their own health, and it catches up with them. These small habits take minutes and make a real difference.

PROTECT YOUR SLEEP: Sleep is the first thing to go and the hardest to make up. Keep a regular bedtime when you can, and let a call go to voicemail when someone else is on duty.

MOVE FOR TEN MINUTES: A ten-minute walk around the block or the hospital parking lot clears your head and lowers stress. You do not need a workout. You need to move.

ASK FOR ONE SPECIFIC THING: People want to help and do not know how. Replace "I'm fine" with a specific request: "Can you bring dinner Thursday?" or "Can you sit with Mom on Saturday morning?"

KEEP YOUR OWN APPOINTMENTS: Put your own checkups and prescriptions in your calendar with a reminder, the same way you do for the person you care for. Your health is part of the plan.

BREATHE: When the day gets away from you, stop and take five slow breaths. It is the fastest reset I know.

Pick one of these and start today. Your future self will thank you!
